Ørnulv´s 2017 in review – looking forwards…

A little late, but still.

I only completed a handful of my goals set for 2017. A heavy workload, and hobby fatigue caused by that I took on to much work when the team prepared for the Adepticon Event, being the main reasons.

So what did, or did I not, accomplish?

Gaming; I did manage to host 4 gaming events; two at home and two at my summerhouse. Great fun. I also attended the Adepticon Friendly Tournament, and the Adepticon Team Tournament. As always, good fun with good friends. I really enjoyed the Friendly Tournament witch I attended for the first time. Trond also attended. I was about to pack my army when Trond scouted my name out loud, I did not get it first, but I won the tournament. Double the fun! Getting closer to the end of the year, I got a couple of games in, struggling with adapting to 8^th edition. I hope I will be getting there during 2018…

I did not manage to do any work on my Ultramarines 1. Company. Sad. During 2016 I almost built and primed all the models I need to finish my quest. I have to do better in 2018. However, I did manage to finish:

- One unit of 5 Devastators with 4 Graviton Cannons
- One unit of 5 Sternguard Veterans
- One Drop Pod kited out to carry a Dreadnought
- A Captain in Cataphractii Terminator Armour
- Two marines packing Graviton weapons

...all of them fielded at Adepticon.

Well, not very impressive, when looking at my normal output per year. However, I did have the pleasure of helping two of my teammates finish and adjusting their own armies in preparation for Adepticon, and to lend a hand to our newest team member with his brand new Necron Army.

So what about 2018? First and foremost I would like to play more games, and play at least 4 games a month. So far in 2018 I have played 5 games, so I am on the right track. I really need to get a grip on 8^th addition, with all three of my army’s… I have also scheduled 3 team events so fare.  And I would like to attend gaming events in Nottingham during this autumn.

I will continue to work on my Ultramarines and Tyranids, trying to make my take on them work. I will also adjust my dark Eldar army when the Codex finally comes...

Jørn's Adepticon 2017 picture-dump

It's been a week... The withdrawal symptoms are a little less acute now.
I guess it's about time I got around to dumping 'a few' pictures...

First, a few random armies ready for the 40K Championship:

Leaving Trond to play in the Champoinship, the rest of us came across a big table in the back of the hall, with a truly epic number of Titans. Stock, converted and scratch-built.

On Thursday, Trond and Ørnulf played in the 40K Friendly while Inger Helene and I played in the Long War Doubles. I didn't get the chance to take any pictures from the former, but we have these from the latter:

As Saturday came around, so too did our 'Main Event'. The 40K Team Tounament kicked off with two great games the from Model Citizens team. Regrettably, this is the only game that day I had the presence of mind to actually take pictures of:

For our first game on Sunday, we had the honour and great pleasure to be invited to play the streamed game on Warhammer TV. Added levels of stress??? Whatever do you mean? It was really nice to be able to have a peek 'behind the curtains' of the show.

The last game of the day (...as well as the tournament and the con, actually) was no less fun, though. A gloriously golden Bender-bot Necron army with a really fun bunch of guys rolling the dice.

...and with those, I just want to say thank you to all of our wonderful opponents and to all the other wonderful people we got to get to know - not to forget our friends from previous trips that we got to meet again. We're sure to be coming back to Adepticon again! Maybe next year, maybe in a few... We'll have to see...

For now, we just need to get our painting stations set back up and get on with the next project.

Ultramarines – Captain in Cataphractii Terminator Armour

My third 2017 project done; I needed a commander who could lead my Ultramarines during the upcoming Adepticon 2017 Team Tournament (as well as being a nice addition to my 1. Company).

I decided to arm him with a Combibolter, Storm Shied and Auspex. Yes I know, I kited the model with a Combibolter - the reason being I think it compliments the model much better then the more “bulky” Stormbolter. Since the model I used to a great extent is a “snap fit” model, I had to use a different arm then the kit provided. I therefore also had to add a shoulder pad. I decided to go with a terminator shoulder pad from Forge World (I guess it is not to far off having to change some of the armour plating during a couple of centuries of battle…). I also added a head with a helmet as I think it looks more in coherency with the rest of my force.

What next? Definitely more special weapons for my Tactical Squads.

Crimson Fists Captain in Cataphractii Armour revisited

As I was finishing up my Captain, a little while ago, we were talking about the various equipment options available for the army list entry. I had discounted any further upgrades on the assumption that they would increase the model's points-cost beyond the worth of any advantage could be bought. That, and I still had a Land Speeder and a Drop Pod to finish off at the time.

Ørn, who is obviously a more accomplished reader than I am, pointed out that a Storm Shield didn't cost more than five points for this model. That'd give me a 2+/3++ save where any ones rolled while using the invulnerable save could be rerolled. There was nothing else for it... Back into the Bitz Boxes I went, hunting for an Imperial Fists phalanx warder squad shield I thought I'd picked up at some point.

A bit of file work allowed me to glue a random plastic bit in where the gun slot had been. Magnets in the model's wrist and both the sword- and shield-hands allows me to swap between the two equipment options. The pictures reveals a little sloppy works on the lining, so I guess I'll have to go back and see if I can tidy that up a bit in the last few weeks before we're off.

Next... I don't know, actually. I haven't really thought beyond this point until just now. I have plenty more Crimson Fists ready to paint as well as lots of CSM that I can build...

We'll see what I can keep close at hand, now that I'm also starting the long an arduous process of moving house.

Ultramarines – Sternguard Veterans

My second 2017 project done; upgrading my 1. Company Sternguard Veteran units. My goal for 2017 is to finish my 1. Company.

This time I focused on Veterans with standard equipment. My goal is to field a total of 55 Veterans, consisting of a variation of: Sternguard Veterans, Vanguard Veterans and Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs. The rest of my 1. Company will consist of 20 Terminators, 20 Assault Terminators and 5 terminators in Cataphrachtii Armour. Still a long way to go - but at least 7 of these guys are now finally finished.

I am looking forward to fielding them at the upcoming Adepticon 2017 Team Tournament. What next? Someone to lead them into battle perhaps, ore more special weapons for my Tactical Squads?

Crimson Fists Drop Pods

More often than not, there is a significant amount of time to be saved in the long run by building/painting several models at once. If you actually have time enough available to actually take on mre than one at a time, though.

For this year's Adepticon I needed just one more Drop Pod to supplement the four I made two years ago. I have yet another few built and undercoated, but I didn't think I'd have the time to complete more than one so they will have to await their turn in... later this year, hopefully. I may even have to go back over this one again, or perhaps the four from before, then to bring a few detail back into line across the set.

This one, earmarked for the Devastator squad from a few weeks ago, will be joining the first batch as we're starting to pack up for the trip across The Pond. Now, if only that Primer Missions document could drop...
