Bloodthirster of... Magnetized Anger?

Sorry I missed my 'regular' timeslot last Sunday. RealLife (tm) kind of got in the way...

I'd like to be able to say I'll do better, going forward, but the Bloodthirster here marks the end of a nearly two-month 'hobby-spurt'. I seems I've run out of 

The kit went together really well! The biggest... 'issue' was deciding which pair of arms to use. I wanted to be able to use all three Bloodthirster-variants - without having to buy three models.

I quickly figured out that the giant axe for the Bloodthirster of Insensate Rage was the most restrictive weapon pose-wise, and used the arms that fit that one. Magnets in the wrists and the various hands allow me to swap between the variants as the mood takes me...

Lots (and lots) of surface texture allowed for a relatively quick drybrush-up-and-shade-down (repeat until happy) technique, allowing me to finish the model over a couple weeks worth of evenings. An old and mangled Space Marine Bike was repurposed for the base, and painted my favourite shade of blue.

With nothing left that's ready to paint, I'll be building kits from my on-sprue-and-in-bag drawer. I suppose I can do the occasional show-and-tell, once I have a handful of built kits.

Herald of Khorne, on foot

Another small update for you this weekend...

I have something bigger and time-consuming than the last few weeks on my painting table at the moment... No cookies forguessing what it is, though. It shouldbe pretty obvious.

Anyway; That means the weekly update has to be somehing I've prepared earlier. As far as I know, this is the Herald model from the Throne/Skullcannon kit. I've put it on a 30mm base, as the stance is far, far to wide to een consider fitting on a 25mm one.

Even so, I've had to chop up one of the mutated arms I still have left over from the handful of Possessed kits I've bought overth years to accomodate the model's pose and try to keep it interesting.

By this time, next weeknd, we should all be back from the gaming event at Ørn's place. Hopefully, someone will have some pictures from that for you. ;)

Bloodletters, second batch

Hope everyone's had a good Halloween. Here's that second batch of Bloodletters.

Two squads of eight, and a few spares not pictured here. That should be enough to keep me in shock troops for a while.

Just one one more small squad left, to complete the army I plan to use in a few weeks.

Then perhaps I'll still have time left over to complete a 'stretch goal' or two...

Herald of Khorne on Juggernaut

Just a quick update again, this week. I'm still working on the next batch of Bloodletters, so all I have for you today is this Herald on Juggernaut. I suppose it's really just a Bloodcrusher, but until I get around to doing a squad of those it'll do well enough accompanying a unit of Flesh Hounds.

I've spread a liberal amount of heads and helmets from my bitz boxes onto the base, as befitting a favoured soldier of the Blood God.

The Juggernaut has been painted pretty much per the usual colour scheme for my Word Bearers' armour, but I've experimented with Black and Sepia inks from Vallejo in addition to the the usual Red Ink from Citadel Colours. The oxidation/verdigris effect on the brassy pieces is a watery mix of blue and green paints followed by a light dry-brush of 'Brassy Brass' again.

Bloodletters, first batch

Nothing too spectacular this week, but there is some progress on the Khorne Daemonkin project.

This week I have managed to finish a squad of Bloodletters. That leaves just one more squad of the Blood God's foot soldiers, as well as some Possessed.

Not quite sure what to do for those, though...

Chaos Lord / Herald of Khorne on Juggernaut of Khorne

There's limited use in a pack of dogs if the pack doesn't have a suitable leader. Luckily, the 'perfect' character for the job is right there in the HQ section of the Chaos Daemons codex.

Enter the Herald of Khorne, astride a Juggernaut to be able to keep up with his charges. Alternatively, this guy can just as easilly represent a Chaos Lord on a Daemonic Mount.

While Beasts and Cavalry do interact a little differently with Difficult Terrain, they behave similarly enough that potential issues are easily avoided with a little forethought.

The model above is kitbashed from a number of different kits. The Juggernaut itself, the rider's legs and right arms (See below!) are from the Skullcrushers. The rider's head, torso, backpack and shoulder guards comes from CSMs Possessed. The final bit is the left arm, which comes from the Blood Throne.

While the initial idea is to run the model with an Axe of Khorne, I have made a little effort in magnetizing the right arm to allow for multiple weapon options...

Flesh Hounds of Khorne - Jørn's Dogs of War

"Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war".

What to do when $10 / £6 per model seems a little excessive for a unit of Flesh Hounds of Khorne? GW's own Dire Wolves costs just over a quarter of the above price. Even if you do buy the bases from GW too, you're still saving more than fifty per cent.

I've had ten of these assembled and primed for quite a while now, but was waiting on ten more that Tom-Erik brough around when we managed to get a game in a while ago.

With all twenty 'ready to go', I overheard somewhere that they went on 50mm bases now... A quick check on GW's web store confirmed it. Back to square one!

Of course, GW tells us we can use whatever bases we feel are appropriate... I could no longer get past how small the 40mm bases suddenly looked.

After a quick and fruitless round of GW's web store and a number of bits-stores later, I found a seller on eBay who had exactly what I wanted - at far less than the aforementioned web stores wanted.

Hobby progress - WIP

So, here's a little update from the workbench in Bryn. No points progression in April, but some progress so far in May, and maybe some of these models will be ready for the tabletop in a not far future. One thing learned: Green stuff and the right tools is essential!

I have a lot of ideas when it comes to painting, but I would really appreciate what you think I should do with these four stars, maybe the furry gang in the back as well...

Lord of Change/Daemon Prince:
My idea is not that flower power painting scheme we see too much of, but rather a dark, still tzeentchish feel. My plan is to have some really striking highlight and contrasting colors, but the model in general is going to be dark.

Be'lakor:
This little grand old man is going more in the lines of the GW style, dark black, grey and some light variations. Hopefully I will manage to get this one some nice highlighting and contrasts as well.

Kairos Fateweaver:
Dark blue, some dark purple and the necessary highlights/striking contrasts.

Herald of Khorne on juggernaut:
Dark, dark blood red, maybe brownish black juggernaut highlighted with light red, orange to make it pop. The herald is going from dark brown to highlight. It's important for me that there is a clear distinction between rider and steed.

Any thoughts and ideas highly appreciated! :)

March hobby challenge

Finally finished with my hobby challenge for march. Two squads of Daemonettes, 10 plus 12, plus a herald of Slaanesh. Around 350 points, so maybe not so bad after all.

I started off airbrushing several layers with my Krome, the first few testing with glaze medium to ensure especially the shadows are visible. Difficult, but learning by doing. After some layers I found out that my job with molding lines had been really sloppy, but not much I could do without making even uglier paint lines on the models. So not very satisfied with my preparations. Note to self there.

I got the idea of a slightly warmer skin tone from the tutorials on the excellent and fast shipping UK store Element Games. I had a lot of questions underway - never sure on what do do - what colors to use. I came down to purple/turqouise, which was quite fun. The hair and tentacles on the old models were also difficult to decide on.

I'm quite satisfied with the end result, but there are always a lot of things that irritate me: Mold lines, dots destroying the smoothness of the skin, too hard metals and so on. Not the potentially fantastic shading from airbrushing that could have been.

I think I must have a couple of days to decide what next - so that I can get around with 650 points for the Øvre Ullern weekender in late april. Sounds like it means the Lord of Change that lies in the bottom of a shoe box...

List building - wtf?

I need help, or just a little advice on a list for Invasion.

 

I’m rusty and I need a really quick fix. Nurgle is still my main theme, but with a little effort I think I can manage to blend in a little Daemons contingent. What are your thoughts on this? What armies will it suffer the most against, what armies will it stand a good chance against? You may mention the bad dice throwing general 😉 

No termies, no triple las predator, no daemon princes, no high strength CC weapons. What is this list's main weakness in a turnament, a turnament I just want to play and have fun and honestly not care about the results...

Daemons of Nurgle (Bad Omen II)

With most of us in full swing with the summer vacation, it's not likely that the traffic here will pick up again just yet. I am back at work for a few weeks before resuming my own vacation, however, so I've dug out a few of kits I've had lying around in various dark places and am finally getting around to doing something with them.

First project to reach the Finished stage is the rest of my old metal Nurgle Daemons. They've all been undercoated with Army Painter's bone coloured spray primer and had various details airbrushed various other base colours. After this, normal painting techniques were employed to further pick out details before the models received a coat from my not-yet-dry jar of polyurethane wood stain.

As I look at the pictures I've taken now, I see a few details that I should go back and do properly. They'll probably be seeing a bit of table time in the next few matches. If there's anyone around to play with, that is. In the mean time, I've got a handful of terrain pieces where I'm just waiting for some glue to dry...

Plaguebearers of Nurgle (Bad Omen I)

As a suitable counts-as concept for Plague Marines continues to elude me, I was digging around in my bitz boxes for inspiration when I came upon an old ice cream box with the Mark of Nurgle on a Post It note. Upon opening the rather hefty box I discovered a rather big lot of metal Plague Bearer and Nurgling models. There was also a Great Unclean One box underneath the ice cream box, but that's a project for another time.

Putting the T5 Marines back on the back-burner, I sorted out the models and figured ou that I could do three squads of seven distinct models. The remaining seven have so many duplicate models I doubt I'll be making a fourth squad.

I managed two squads before the end of the month, but should get around to the third towards the end of may. I started both squads off with a base coat of Army Painter's Desert Yellow spray. For the first squad I started detailing and highlighting from there, while the second squad got a good coat of Green Ink before detailing/highlighting. Both squads got a coat of a polyurethane woodstain for final shadowing/wet-look/sealing. It looks like I may have started a small force of Chaos Daemons to ally in with the Word Bearers in those big games we sometimes play.
